Thanks for checking out my website.
I want to tell you about how the essays came to be.
I don’t really think of myself as a writer; I think of myself as a musician who reads.
So I treat every essay like a piece of music, each one an improvisation.
Sometimes I begin with an idea, sometimes with none at all. Either way, I don't usually know where the piece will end up by the time I finish it.
You’ll notice a musical form listed above each essay. That’s intentional. I think of these less as essays than as compositions.
Now, the first line is the only part I can’t force–I wait for it.
I don’t sit down determined to manufacture an opening. I wait until the right sentence arrives. Only then do I begin. Once it does, I simply follow wherever it leads.
I usually write one or two of these essays each week, always with music playing in the background. Reading feeds the process. Music shapes it. Together they make writing one of the most enjoyable activities in my life.
Thank you again for being here. I hope you enjoy reading these essays as much as I enjoy discovering them.
